A new study actually found that there’s a deterioration of mood if you’ve spent too much time on Facebook. Excessive browsing at Christmas and seeing festivities being celebrated may make you feel miserable. Why, though? The research conducted by the University of Copenhagen discovered that too much time spent on these sites can harbor feelings of envy. “Lurking” online without connecting with anyone has a negative impact on your emotional well-being. Lurking Online Makes You Miserable, Says Study“Spending too long on social media can mean a “deterioration of mood” Too much Facebook browsing at Christmas – and seeing all those “perfect” families and holiday photos – is more likely to make you miserable than festive, research suggests. Read more… The Telegraph UK says that it’s the perfect opportunity for us to disconnect with the rest of the world and spend this precious time with family and friends. Many of us only get to see loved ones just once or twice a year. It may be a good reason to document everything that you’re doing. Taking pictures and videos of your family and friends seem like a good start. However, once you log in and start looking at other people’s updates, researchers warn that some tend to get envious because of “unrealistic social comparisons.” This simply implies that there are people who get affected because of what they see on social media and it greatly affects their satisfaction with life. Facebook ‘Lurking’ Could Make You Miserable This ChristmasChristmas with close family and friends offers the perfect opportunity to disconnect from the internet for a while, but many of us will still log into Facebook to share photos, videos and updates over the festive period. Read more… Mashable reports that the research found a solution to this. But most of us definitely won’t like it. The simple remedy is taking a break from social media. It will surely have a positive impact on your well-being. However, the study explains that this solution may not be applicable for some. The researchers found that those who took a break from the social media site experienced a positive effect on two aspects of well-being. This contributes to positive emotion and life satisfaction. Study Says Browsing Facebook Updates May Make You Feel MiserableThe study found that taking a break from social media will have an overwhelmingly positive impact on your overall wellbeing. But, the study also conceded that taking a break isn’t necessarily the best option for everyone. Read more… It would even be more helpful though if the sample population also included men so that it would be able to represent the general populace. The findings were essential in understanding why people harbour these negative feelings. It’s really helpful in letting people become aware of their behaviour. Aside from that, it offers ways to stop or manage negativity this holiday season. If you’re someone who enjoys a routine run every day, you might have thought about the effects of running. You might have pondered about the consequences of all that pounding on your knees. Worry no more! There’s some good news from Birmingham Young University. It appears that a recent study from this institution has found some great results. Running appears to lower the inflammation in your knee joint, contrary to what we believed in. The authors of the study say that it may protect the knees from degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis. Is Running Actually Good For Your Knees? If you’re a runner, then maybe you’ve worried about the long-term consequences of all that pounding on your knees. But here’s some encouraging news: According to a study from Brigham Young University, running appears to reduce inflammation in the knee joint—not increase it, as commonly believed. Read more… The study co-author is Matt Seeley, PhD. He is an associate professor of exercise science at BYU. He explains that the notion about long-distance running might be a myth after all. In order to actually test it out, Seeley and the other researchers examined the fluid samples from knee joints of healthy young men and women. Their ages range from 18-35. These were taken before and after a 30-minute running session. Turns Out Running May Actually Be Good for Your KneesTo test this age-old theory, Seeley and his colleagues analyzed samples of fluid taken from the knee joints of healthy men and women, ages 18 to 35, both before and after a 30-minute run. Read more… Science Daily talks about the possibility of experiencing inflammation and soreness. Well, it’s the price that anyone has to pay if they’re focusing on maintaining cardio wellness. The team discovered that the specific markers they tried to find in the synovial fluid, showed a significant decrease in concentration. These markers were two cytokines named GM-CSF and IL-15. Exercise does create an anti-inflammatory environment that may potentially prove to be beneficial when it comes to long-term joint health. Running Actually Lowers Inflammation In Knee JointsYou know; no pain, no gain. Well, maybe not. New research from exercise science professors finds that pro-inflammatory molecules actually go down in the knee joint after running. Read more… This presents great news since osteoarthritis affects 27 million in the United States. This is the painful disease that’s characterized by the wearing and tearing of cartilage. This gets even worse over time. Hopefully, the researchers will be able to conduct future studies that may help develop a form of exercise therapy for those with knee problems or conditions. Scientists have found a distinctive neural signature that explains why people with the condition find it hard to read. The researchers took MRI scans of individuals with and without reading difficulties. The participants performed a variety of tasks while getting their brains scanned. They discovered that those diagnosed with the condition has reduced the ability to acclimate to repeated input. Moreover, they also found out that the brain’s plasticity is reduced as well. Plasticity supports the ability to learn new things. Dyslexia breakthrough as doctors discover differences in sufferers’ brains which could explain why they struggle to readMIT neuroscientists found that the brains of people with dyslexia have a diminished ability to acclimate to a repeated input, like seeing the same word a number of times. The findings suggest the brain’s plasticity, which supports the ability to learn new things, is reduced in these cases. Read more… Boston Globe says that the brain abnormalities that cause the condition might be deeper that what we thought. A study was published last Wednesday in the journal Neuron. It discussed that the brains of people with the reading disorder might react differently to words, objects, and faces. Dyslexia is a neurological disorder that might prove to be challenging even in highly intelligent people. It’s hard to learn how to read especially because of problems relating speech sounds with letters and words. Study Suggests Dyslexics Suffer From Less Brain PlasticityThe brain abnormalities that cause dyslexia may be deeper and more pervasive than previously thought, according to research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Read more… Time.com says this is more than just a reading disorder. People with dyslexia have a hard time with adaptability. When the brain experiences something new, may it be a word or a voice it uses neural energy to collect as much information about the stimulus as possible. If it does this every time it hears the same voice, it would be deemed as inefficient. What it does is that it adapts and quickly triage new encounters from familiar ones. Why Dyslexia Is More Than a Reading DisorderBut in the latest research published in the journal Neuron, scientists led by John Gabrieli, a professor of brain and cognitive sciences at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, found that dyslexia may be due to a much broader difference in brain function. Read more… The researchers believe that this might be the first ever study to take a look at evidence related to reduced plasticity in the brain of dyslexics. The findings help educators understand what the condition is really about so they can improve their teaching strategies and help students better. The study, which was spearheaded by the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, gives us concrete details about the structure of the protein involved in Alzheimer’s. The protein is called, TREM2. Researchers discovered that mutations related to another brain disorder alter the protein’s interior. These tend to change the TREM2’s role in cleaning cellular waste through the process called phagocytosis. Study Details Molecular Roots Of Alzheimer’sA new study at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis details the structure of TREM2, a protein involved in Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. Read more… WUSTL.edu says that it’s a good thing the researchers were able to implicate the molecule related to the disease. Simply knowing the shape of this molecule gives us a chance. It can help us understand how other neurodegenerative diseases develop. We can take a look at potential preventive measures and treatment. The idea that this protein is somehow responsible for cognitive decline has long been supported. Previous studies show that mutations which affect the structure of TREM2 puts an individual at a higher risk for developing late-onset Alzheimer’s. Cellular ‘Housekeeping’ Molecule’s Structure Linked To NeurodegenerationKnowing the shape of the molecule — and how that shape may be disrupted by certain genetic mutations — can help in understanding how Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases develop and how to prevent and treat them. Read more… Senior author Thomas J. Brett, PhD, an assistant professor of medicine, says that they’re not sure what TREM2 contributes to neurodegeneration but inflammation is common among these conditions. The study takes a closer look at the mutations. They also tackled what it does to the structure and how it can affect the function. If they understand it, they might be able to find ways how to correct it. Study Details Molecular Roots Of Alzheimer’sOther TREM2 mutations are linked to Nasu-Hakola disease, a rare inherited condition that causes progressive dementia and death in most patients by age 50. Eating processed meat might make asthma worse, researchers said. The study, published in the journal Thorax, suggests that consuming more than four portions a week can increase your risk. Nearly 1,000 French subjects were included in the research. The scientists believe that nitrite might be the culprit. It is a preservative found in common meats like sausages, salami, and ham. It aggravates the airways, making symptoms even worse. Processed Meat ‘Could Be Bad For Asthma’Rather than worry about one type of food, people should be eating a healthy and varied diet, they advise. Processed meat has already been linked with cancer. Read more… Daily Mail UK reports that the study chose 971 participants with asthma. They were monitored for over four years. It was found that 14% who ate processed meats once a week had worse symptoms. 20% of those who ate it four times a week found that their condition was deteriorating. Those who ate it more than four times, the percentage was 22. The results imply that at least 5.4 million people in the UK with asthma problems could face a greater risk if they don’t limit their consumption of cured or processed meats. Why Eating Ham Or Sausages Four Times A Week Could Worsen AsthmaThe experts, from Paul Brousse Hospital in Paris, tracked 971 people and monitored diet and asthma symptoms such as ease of breathing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Read more… Health experts encourage people to cut down on processed meats as part of a healthy diet. The thing is, a lot of adults and even children like to eat these foods. Regularly indulging in bacon sandwiches and other foods of the same kind may potentially double the risk of an asthma attack. Obesity plays a role in this too. It may influence symptoms such as increasing inflammation throughout the body that could affect the lungs. The researchers made adjustments in their analysis. Diet Rich In Processed Meat ‘May Worsen Asthma Symptoms’The researchers think compounds called nitrites, which are used to preserve meat, might be the culprits, as they have been linked to inflammation in the airways. Read more… The researchers admit that they still haven’t established the connection and they require further investigations. Though this is the case, it gives individuals a hint to take a watchful approach when it comes to their food intake. Yes, you’re considered an adult when you reach the legal age of 18, in most countries. However, if you’re looking at a scientific perspective, adulthood is like a mystery that remains unsolved. Neuroscientists admit that they do not know when exactly adolescence ends and when adulthood begins. Not based in your physical body of course, but more on your brain age. You’re An Adult, But Some Experts Might DisagreeEven neuroscientists don’t know when adolescence ends and adulthood begins in the brain — after all, our brains are constantly changing, according to a new opinion paper published in the journal Neuron b Wednesday. Read more… Science Daily says that different parts of the brain mature at different rates. It doesn’t grow up entirely overnight. A psychologist finds that defining maturity is more complex and challenging. Leah Somerville a, a Harvard psychologist, says that using neuroscience tools to determine when a brain “reaches maturity” is much trickier than it may seem. Researchers should reach a consensus about what would define “maturity” in the first place. The Challenge Of Defining MaturityWhile the law has to draw a line between adolescence and maturity, ranging globally from 10 to the early 20s, different parts mature at different rates, rather than growing up entirely overnight.” Read more… New York Times says that the importance of brain maturity is relevant to a lot of legal questions. The right age for voting, be subjected to law, informed consent: these are just some of the issues presented. People like Dr. Somerville have been through a lot of research for the past few years. They’ve learned a great deal about it and how it works. However, the challenging scene that’s about to unfold doesn’t have a clear cut line that policy makers would want to have. Does Age Define Maturity?Leah H. Somerville, a Harvard neuroscientist, sometimes finds herself in front of an audience of judges. They come to hear her speak about how the brain develops. Read more… The development of these networks is still pretty unclear. They haven’t established how these influence behavior. Dr. Somerville said that it’s essential for the researchers to get a bigger picture of how this major organ progresses. They would have to conduct large-scale studies to monitor its development. WB News says that there’s an affordable way to check if you’re at risk of a heart attack. This is a blood test that can predict which healthy patients are prone to have an attack. Experts explain that it could be an even better assessment than checking blood pressure and cholesterol levels. They have only conducted this on men but the British Heart Foundation-funded researchers say that it should work on women as well. The test is called troponin. It looks for a protein that’s released when the heart muscle is damaged. Blood Test For Hidden DiseaseDoctors already use the same blood test to help diagnose men and women who they suspect have just had a heart attack. But researchers from Edinburgh and Glasgow universities say it should be used to help patients avoid ever reaching this point. Read more… BBC.com says that Prof Nicholas Mills and colleagues discovered that the men who had increased levels of troponin in their blood were more likely to have an attack or die of the disease 15 years later. In order to circumvent this, patients should undergo preventive treatment. This means taking cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins) in order to decrease the risk as well as their troponin levels. Trace the Hidden DiseaseThe 3,300 men in the study had high cholesterol but no history of heart disease. The scientists now plan to do more research involving women too. Read more.. Huffington Post says that the protein presence in the bloodstream are excellent markers as this is highly linked to heart problems. The test is currently used to confirm heart attacks that were suspected to have happened. Professor David Newby explains that troponin acts like a barometer of health.
