There’s in fact truth to what our elders claim as a healing power of bone broth when mothers used to hand us a bowl of chicken or beef bone soup when down with the flu or having a cold, in fact, the practice is even encouraged as it provides a wealth of health benefits, even better than consuming meat. What people believed as bone broth are actually soup stock produced from boiling meat and bones, making a soup full of proteins and nutrients that are good for the body, which contains a good amount of essential amino acids and minerals, believed to be higher than the meat itself. Breakdown Of The Healing Power Of Bone BrothGlycineIt may be considered as a non essential amino acid and is highly bioavailable in the body, however, this is involved in ensuring some of the essential processes in the body. Glycine contributes to the production of creatine, glutathione and heme, the substance that transport iron and oxygen in the blood. Glycine is also essential for the healing of wounds and contribute to glucose production and digestion. As a major neurotransmitter, glycine helps in promoting deep sleep and has become popular with fasting programs as it has been proven to support glucose production and detoxification while it minimizes muscle protein degeneration. ProlineIt is most associated as part of the structure of collagen and a key component that make up the skin, ligaments, tendons, cartilage and bones. It is needed for the body to repair damaged tissues while sleeping. Low amounts of proline in the body has been shown to slow down healing. Both glycine and proline make up almost half of the composition of collagen, which is the most abundant protein and the body and is considered as the main building block of connective tissue, including ligaments and tendons. When the body goes through aging, collagen also breaks down leading to reduced structural stability, hardening of the joints, thins out cartilage and makes the skin less resilient to diseases and infections. Meat bones that come from the knuckles, feet , bone marrow and big bones are rich in collagen and when simmered for long periods, produce the collagen rich broth. When cooked, collagen gets broken down into gelatin that helps support gut healing and has been proven to have god effects for those with autoimmune diseases or systematic inflammation. Just like the bones made for broth, it provides the body with all the raw elements needed to rebuild and strengthen the body’s connective tissues. Among the other nutrients that can be sourced from bone broth are glutamine that strengthens the immune system and helps maintain the integrity of the intestinal walls. It also provides good amounts of glycosaminoglycans that promote bone health, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate that helps fight joint inflammation and glucosamine. You may start saving on those meat bones so you can benefit from its healthy nutrients that promise the healing power of bone broth. The idea of rest days during the week often get confused with the usual weekend schedule of no work often associated with the average Joe, but truth be told, especially for those wanting to have a healthy and physically fit life why rest days are important and how it affects the body’s response to your physical well-being. Have you ever wondered by rest days are deliberately incorporated into workout and exercise programs? Or wonder if you should do light exercises during your workout rest days? The answer is simple and straightforward. Rest! It is essential for your body’s development and progress as it is needed to realize the effects of your physical conditioning and exercises. When you do physical activities like weight lifting or exercising, the muscles produce micro tears or mini damage to the fibers that is responsible for muscle soreness that you feel after your workouts. This process makes way for the body to rest and recover in order to allow the body to heal, grow and develop- which cannot happen unless the body is in rest mode. The American Council on Exercise strongly recommends that a rest day should be a non-training day where the body is not subjected to any physical challenge. Failure to provide your body that much needed rest after a training or workout program can hurt you in the long run. Because it lets you see little to no effects of your gruelling week-long workout. The ideal fitness cycle should be a cycle of workout, recover, gain, repeat and the elements are non-negotiable in order to see the desired results in the long run. But make sure to also keep in mind that as you resolve to consistently do your workouts for your health benefit, the determination and will to follow-through on the cycle is very important to your fitness quest. The process can also be mental, as behavioural changes also affect the way you deal with workouts like how to stay motivated and determined to travel your course. Stressors like work-related pressure, deadlines and other factors could affect the way you deal with your workout programs. Coming to the gym with an angry mood can cause you to let off more steam and in the process, causes you to lose energy very soon and end up spent after your workout. Motivation levels begin to hit on you and sometimes even cause you to burn out and lose interest in your workouts as you start to seek solace in bingeing just to seek comfort, but could end up walking home instead of working out. It also does not mean that you just do nothing while at rest, just make sure you continue the momentum, it may not be strenuous or high intensity, just something to keep the vibe going.
Remember that too much exercise can be counterproductive and don’t train your body too much, lest it may backfire and cause you to lose interest which is why rest days are important and one that should not be ignored. Scientists have reason to believe that degenerative diseases may be triggered by possible toxic remnants of the body’s battle against harmful bacteria that may finally answer the question can infections cause alzheimer’s in the long run. Just like in an actual war scenario, as the brain signals the body to fight off diseases it leaves in its path remnants akin to spent ammunition strewn all over the place. A recent study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, researchers from Harvard University revealed they have seen evidence of a possible offshoot of the brain’s fight for infection that could be responsible for causing Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers trace the origin and presence of plaque in the brain, which are characterized by those tiny ball-shaped deposits that are associated with the degenerative brain disease. It may be too early to conclude, but the study caught the interest of the medical community that infections, no matter how mild it is, could trigger a reaction that may leave debris in the brain, making them lean towards answering can infections cause alzheimer’s disease. Scientists are also claiming that if this evidence could hold true with how it affects the development of Alzheimer’s disease, then it could be a major breakthrough in the treatment or prevention of this degenerative brain disease. Presenting a scenario straight out of a science fiction plot, researchers explained that when a fungus, bacterium or virus gets into the brain it passes through a membrane called the blood-brain barrier. The defense system of the brain rushes in to prevent the invader from further causing damage by creating a membrane that acts like a cage out of proteins called beta amyloid. With the microbe gets trapped into the cage until it dies-leaving behind the protein cage that represents plaque in the brain that are also commonly found among Alzheimer’s patients. The researchers have so far confirmed their findings on results from their laboratory experiments and from samples with neurons in petri dishes taken from fruit flies, mice, yeast and roundworms, but indicate that there is still ore work to be done to determine this would be the same reaction in humans, of which plans and funding are underway to jumpstart further studies that will involve human brains. It may be a long way to go before science may answer if infections can cause alzheimer’s disease, but science may soon be able to find out and provide a good direction towards addressing this degenerative brain disease. Speculations have been rife – both hypothetical and absurd – if it is ok to let babies cry, but in fact, would even serve to dispel belief that it can cause attachment issues between the baby and the parents. In a recent study conducted by researchers from Flinders University shows evidence that controlled crying methods of babies do not cause any detrimental effects on both the baby and the parent and advising that it is natural for parents to allow their babies to cry at bedtime. Allowing babies to cry would provide infants with better rest and even helps in brain development among babies as they grow and prepare to sleep. Study author Associate Professor Michael Gradisar, said that crying is a natural occurrence for babies and is something that should not cause any concern among parents. ‘While it’s well documented that sleep deprivation can cause family distress, including maternal depression, we’re hoping these results will add another element to how parents view their responses and how they manage their own and their babies’ sleep behavior,’ Dr. Gradisar said. Their study was focused on two common sleep training techniques with 43 babies aged six to 16 months having night-time issues and were grouped into three. A group utilized a graduated extinction method or controlled crying, designed to allow babies to sleep on their own, with the parents asked to wait for a few minutes to respond after the babies start crying, allowing to comfort the baby but not pick them up from the crib. The second group, used a bedtime fading method where parents delayed the baby’s bedtime by another 15 minutes in an attempt to let them fall asleep easier. The time delay could be extended for a few more minutes if the babies were still having problems like bottle feeding and such, which usually occurs around the time babies get into their bedtime. A control group was also formed where parents were simply provided information on what healthy sleeping habits to apply without the need to apply any of the two studied methods. After a period of three months, the babies from both sleep-training groups were able to fall asleep at 10 to 13 minutes faster compared to their usual sleeping patterns, with no difference from the control group. Infants from the controlled-crying group were able to sleep better at night, waking up on an average of only once or twice compared to three times prior to the study, and stress levels among mothers dropped with no signs of stress caused by the test among the babies. Another proof was taken from saliva samples from babies where it showed less amounts of the stress hormone cortisol. A year after the test, scientists conducted a follow-up study and found that there were no significant differences with behavioural problems, emotional or attachment issues in both babies and parents who took part in the study. “A combination of using bedtime fading first, then moving on to graduated extinction could be another good approach and we hope parents of children 6-16 months can become more aware of bedtime fading which helps babies fall asleep at the start of the night,” Dr. Gradisar added. So to answer the question of it is ok to let babies cry before bedtime? Definitely! It’s an all-out war as mosquito hunters search for Zika virus among others. Now, this part of Texas is a 1,777 square mile haven for disease-laden mosquitoes and other insects due to its humid climate and scattered with a large network of shallow canals that makes it an ideal breeding ground for these insects. Mosquito control programs are not new in Harris Country, after it was plagued with an outbreak back in 1965 of St. Louis encephalitis transmitted through mosquitoes and claimed the lives of 32 people, both adults and children. Recently, mosquito control efforts are focused on chemical spraying and foot baths on major transport terminals including airports, as well as strategic de-infestation activities throughout the county that also includes virus strains for West Nile, St Louis encephalitis and dengue. Today, a network of some 50 scientists and technicians in the county were employed for year-round drives to prevent and keep track of such diseases to prevent another epidemic that may strike their community. In the summer, they hire additional 24 workers to step up their work as incidents are expected to increase during the season. Apart from the spraying activities, they set mosquito traps, collect the specimens and conduct research and lab tests for what they now cover on five virus strains that added chikungunya and zika. Their yearly budget for mosquito control is more than $4 million a year. Their work goes beyond than simply catching and trapping these mosquitoes, as the county takes an active role in helping in research to develop vaccines and medicines to fight off these diseases. Director for mosquito control Dr. Mustapha Debboun said that Harris County is home to some 56 varieties of mosquitoes, but only three are in constant watch due to their virus-carrying capabilities. These varieties are the aedes aegypti or the yellow fever mosquito, the aedes albopictus also known as the Asian tiger mosquito and the culex mosquito that are carriers of the virus responsible for St. Louis encephalitis, while so far the rest are relatively harmless, according to Dr. Debboun. Other municipalities limit their mosquito control activities to spraying, however, Harris County takes it up a notch by strategically targeting in areas where infestations are likely to occur to be able to also minimize pesticide effects on the environment. Antibiotics are very powerful tools to help save lives, but it still does have its flaws like sometimes working way too well that it could not tell the difference when fighting off good or bad bacteria, like killing off healthy bacteria in the gut that could stave off diseases in the process of battling the bad ones. These helpful bacteria is known as the microbiome and thrives in the gut to help the body absorb nutrients and minerals from food among others, but are at risk of getting damaged that could cause a variety of health conditions, including one that could make people really sick from a debilitating diarrheal condition that is difficult to treat. A research team from the St. Jude Children’s research hospital is currently working on an antibiotic to kill bad microbes, and may prevent helpful bacteria and the microbiome from being affected during the process of treating diseases with antibiotics. Researchers claimed that their study is focused on developing an antibiotic drug that could target only the harmful ones and leaving the microbiome alone and are currently testing an experimental drug called the Debio 1452 that targets bacteria responsible for staph infections. The study was recently published in the Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy online magazine, Staph bacteria holds one of the most dangerous bacteria strain called the staphylococcus aureus or the MRSA, which has been known to be resistant to methicillin. Researchers argue that antibiotics were historically developed to kill bacteria, but with current scientific breakthroughs and advances in technology, they may be able to develop one that may be smart enough to tell which ones it needs to like and which ones need to be left alone. They claim that this antibiotic targets a protein called FabI which common to all types of staph bacteria but is not commonly found in other bacteria types. As FabI is attacked by the Debio 1452, it compromises the structure of the bacterial cell. The Debio 1452 was tested on lab mice that were treated along with other commonly-used antibiotics such as amoxicillin and clindamycin. The microbioms of those mice that received the test antibiotic were relatively stable, while those treated with other antibiotics significantly dropped. After the test ceased the antibiotics in the mice, their microbiome levels returned to normal and after a couple of days, those that were given Debio 1452 recovered completely. Experts believe that this is a tremendous breakthrough in the field of medicine and expressed hopes that this could further lead the way in developing more antibiotic treatments for a bevy of other types of bacteria that are damaging to health. It may be a long way to go before this type of process is done for all bacteria types, but this is certainly a great step that could lead to future discoveries and disease prevention research. According to the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance, superbugs are responsible for up to 10 million deaths each year due to antimicrobial resistance, with a staggering one death for every three seconds. With that said, the big question is how to stop superbugs from spreading? A global initiative is being pushed in campaigning for public awareness after it has raised concerns about the increasing levels of microbes developing drug resistance paving the way for the evolution of ‘superbugs’ or microbes that become resistant to any form of medication. One of the leading causes of antimicrobial resistance is the wanton use of antibiotics by the public without proper diagnosis, resulting to microbes developing their immunities on the antibiotic strain used to’ treat’ a condition. One of these is due to the ease of access of people purchasing antibiotics and are often sold over the counter. “If we fail to act, we are looking at an almost unthinkable scenario where antibiotics no longer work and we are cast back into the dark ages of medicine,” UK Prime Minister David Cameron said. This after a recent report came out about ‘superbugs’ or microbes that have been resistant to medicine have been estimated to account for 700,000 deaths each year, with little to very minimum developments in addressing these. Unless there are ways to stop the proliferation and more evolved species of these superbugs, looking forward up until 2050 scientists are predicting that the toll may reach staggering proportions and one which the global community warns that must be addressed the soonest. Among the pressing recommendations for this global initiative are the following;> A massive global awareness campaign to educate the people of the risks involved regarding the use of antibiotics. > Establish a $ 2 billion Global Innovation Fund to spur early research activities. > Access to proper sanitation, clean water and clean hospitals, including measures to further prevent the spread of infectious diseases. > Reduce the widespread use of antibiotics in agriculture and enforce a ban on those that are highly critical to human health. > Develop an incentive mechanism that will pay companies $1 billion for every new antibiotic discovered, as well as financial incentives to develop new evaluation and assessment processes that will prevent further administration of the drug if it is not found to work effectively. > Promote the use of vaccines and alternatives to drugs in the prevention of these diseases. Several sectors however express apprehensions over some of the recommendations made by groups as it has been a long running problem with companies to come up with a new type of stronger antibiotics since the latest ones were developed as far back into the 1980’s. The prospect of having a new antibiotic could only be relegated to storage until such time it can be used for emergencies, which would not be enough to recoup from costs for research and development. United States President Barrack Obama has already laid out national plans to spur the campaign on the dangers and control measures to counter the effects of superbugs. Most people favour meat as their primary protein sources, since it is a staple in every average Joe’s diet, from the classic burgers, steaks and barbecues, which many justify as just being secondary to their actual purpose of being a good source of protein. How does protein work? The first thing to know is to understand the link of proteins and muscle development. The science behind muscle or mass building is anchored on the process that the muscles produce micro damage once it is subjected to stress like stretching, lengthening or shortening that occurs during workouts or exercises. Protein synthesis works to produce muscle proteins that aids in the recovery of these damages and works to increase mass as a natural process of strengthening the muscle fiber. Why beef proteins?Recent studies have shown that beef protein has been compared with other protein sources and have been found to be more effective in muscle –building and fat loss capabilities. It has high biological value compared to other protein sources for mass gain. Historically, human ancestors thrived on eating meat as their main source of nutrition and sustenance. They contain essential amino acids that are similar to those found in humans, which ensures a more biological protein synthesis for the body. Quality beef protein isolates are found to contain high quality creatine, B complex vitamins, zinc, manganese and branched chain amino acids that are effective of optimal muscle growth and development. Although there have been some questions raised as to which part of the cow the isolates were sourced from, suspicions abound that it could be derived from the ‘unwanted’ parts like hooves, ears, internal organs, etc. Fortunately, there have been no reports of adverse reactions or health problems that have been associated with the consumption of these supplements. Beef protein isolates is generally made up of 99% protein, which makes it one of the best sources of proteins, where fat and carbohydrates is relatively eliminated. Since beef is hypoallergenic, it helps eliminate gastrointestinal distress and side effects without any adverse reactions to muscle mass gain. Separate studies have also been published that support claims that beef is a potent stimulator of muscle protein synthesis and anabolic signaling. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition have come up with similar research findings to support the claims that cellular responses are essential. In one of the studies, men and women of college age were asked to volunteer to the tests and were equally divided into groups where they were made to consume a beef protein isolate protein and a maltodextrin placebo on a daily basis, while training five days a week for eight weeks. The results revealed that those given the beef protein isolates grew more muscle mass compared to those that consumed the placebo. The beef protein isolate group even gained an average of 7.7 pounds of added muscle mass, while those who took the placebo only gained 0.7 pounds. This makes beef protein isolates one of the best sources of proteins for the body.
